Free Will, Determinism and Fatalism

A man can do what he wants, but not want what he wants.

— Arthur Schopenhauer

I think free will is an illusion. We are not responsible for so many of the things that makes us who we are e.g. the family we were and country we were born in, or the thoughts that decide to pop into our mind.

It’s a lot more logical to say that determinism and a certain level of randomness is what drives us to action. This is quite a relieve because it allows us to stay rational when others act in ways which have harmed us. It even allows us to accept ourselves for who we are.

Determinism is not fatalism. We still have a chance to influence our actions by exposing ourselves to good knowledge and people.
